Longnü
Longnü (龍女)—the "Dragon Girl"—is the daughter of the Dragon King ruler of all bodies of water and Aquatic Life.
Longnü (龍女)—the "Dragon Girl"—is the daughter of the Dragon King of the Eastern Sea and one of the most prominent acolytes of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Guanyin. She represents wisdom, devotion, and sudden spiritual enlightenment in Chinese Buddhism.
The Two Core Myths
Longnü's legend spans foundational Buddhist scripture and Chinese folklore:
• The Lotus Sutra (Scriptural Origin): In Chapter 12, the Lotus Sutra recounts how the brilliant, eight-year-old daughter of Sāgara (the Dragon King) suddenly understood the profound teachings of the Buddha. Despite the prejudice that a woman or an animal-realm being could not attain Buddhahood, she instantaneously offered a priceless, luminous pearl (representing wisdom and enlightenment) to the Buddha, transformed into a male bodhisattva, and achieved immediate enlightenment.
• Folk Legends (Companion to Guanyin): In popular Chinese lore, a young Longnü sneaked out of the undersea crystal palace to watch a village lantern festival. She was trapped when a passing fisherman caught her in a net, unable to return to her true form. Guanyin sent her disciple, Shancai (Sudhana), to purchase the dragon-fish in the market and release it. In deep gratitude, Longnü dedicated her life to studying under Guanyin, becoming her eternal right-hand attendant.
Iconography and Symbolism
In traditional art and statues, Longnü is deeply symbolic:
• The Pearl: She is almost always depicted holding a tray bearing a shimmering pearl, referencing her origin story and her awakening to enlightenment.
• The Pair: She is usually depicted standing on the right side of Guanyin, balanced on the left by Guanyin's other famous disciple, the boy Shancai.
• Attire: She is depicted as a serene, beautiful young girl wearing ornate, imperial robes.
