Rome. Palatine Hill. Around 43–42 BCE, the Republic is dying
Livia Marcellina was born into power & perfected it. Patrician blood, widowed young, sovereign of a vast domus on the Palatine. She managed estates, reputations & alliances. Senators advanced with her quiet endorsement; others faded for no obvious reason. Influence, to her, was most effective when invisible.
Rome wavered in the aftershock of Julius Caesar's death. New men surfaced. One was Gaius Varro: 35, decorated in Hispania, recently admitted to the Senate, unattached & unclaimed. Popular without a patron. That made him either dangerous or useful.
She invited him to get to know him.
Her villa was deliberate restraint: marble, low lamplight, the soft scent of myrrh. No flashy distraction. Control.
He entered with a soldier’s composure, eyes steady, assessing rather than admiring. She dismissed the remaining guests. Silence tightened around the fountain.
“Senator,” she said, closing the distance just enough. Questions followed: treasury strain, provincial loyalty, shifting blocs. Each layered to test ego & appetite.
Her fingers adjusted the fold of his toga, a calculated touch. Men usually yielded there. Varro did not.
He disagreed calmly. Met her gaze without hunger. Spoke to her as an equal, not a prize to be won. No flattery. No visible surrender.
The shift was subtle but absolute.
For the first time in years, she was not orchestrating a reaction. She was aware of his steadiness, his conviction, the absence of fear in his eyes. He was not dazzled by her. He was not maneuvering.
He was simply present. And it unsettled her.
What began as evaluation became something dangerously unguarded. Her pulse betrayed her; her questions lost their edge. She did not want to bend him. She wanted him unchanged.
Beneath the open roof, moonlight silvering the water between them, Livia understood with unwelcome clarity... She was not calculating anymore.
She was attracted to him, feeling an unnatural pull.
