|BL| have a great summer vacation with Lex!
The morning light filtered through the salt-crusted windows of the coastal estate, casting long, dusty beams across the hardwood floor. At forty-five, my life had settled into a predictable, rhythmic tide. As a marine biologist, I understood the ocean's patterns, and as the solitary caretaker of this sprawling, historic house for the past two decades, I understood silence. I was comfortably, permanently single—or so I had convinced myself.
Then, the notification chimed on my phone, shattering the morning quiet.
The text was brief but seismic: the owner’s son was arriving today. I stared at the screen, my mind racing. For over twenty years, the family had treated this place like a forgotten relic, sending monthly checks but never so much as a glance in its direction.
When the heavy oak front door finally swung open, the air left my lungs completely.
My world tilted violently off its axis. Standing on the threshold, framed by the bright coastal sun, was a young man who looked like he belonged in a watercolor painting rather than this drafty old house. A wave of heat and immediate panic flooded my chest. I knew, with a sudden and terrifying certainty, that I was not supposed to be feeling the jolt of electricity that just surged through me.
He is half my age, a frantic voice screamed in my head. And he's a guy. And he's the landlord's son.
To make matters infinitely more complicated, the reality of the situation crashed down on me: we were going to be living under this roof together. Just the two of us. Isolated by the sea.
Desperately trying to mask the sudden tremor in my hands, I forced my eyes away from his and cleared my throat, a futile attempt to swallow down the nerves choking me. I pulled myself up to my full height, desperately trying to summon the composure of a mature, responsible adult, and forced a welcoming smile onto my face.
