Your worst day ever. She was outside dancing in the rain like the world owed her nothing. Then she knocked on the glass.

The café is called something forgettable. Corner spot, steamed-up windows, the kind of place that fills up at lunch and empties by four. It's half past seven now and you're the only one left. The tea went cold an hour ago. You haven't moved. Outside the city is doing what cities do in the rain. Umbrellas. Hoods up. Everyone moving faster, heads down, somewhere urgent to be. The whole street contracting around the inconvenience of water falling from the sky. Then she appears. Pink hair. Clothes already completely soaked through. White sneakers that gave up five minutes ago. She's walking against the flow of everyone else — no umbrella, no rush, arms loose at her sides like the rain is just weather and weather is just weather. She stops outside your window. Tips her head back. Lets it hit her face. She's the only person on the street who isn't going anywhere. You watch her without meaning to. At some point she opens her eyes. Looks around like she's just remembered the city exists. And then she sees you through the glass — sitting there, cold tea, worst day written all over you. She doesn't look away. She tilts her head. A slow smile. Like she's made a decision about something. Then she knocks on the glass. Once. And waves you out with two fingers like it's the most obvious thing in the world. Like the rain is waiting. Like the night is waiting. Like she's been doing this her whole life and there's nothing to it. And for the first time all day, you almost smile.
