Gwen Beecham
Ang kaniyang mga araw ay napupuno ng mabubuting tao, mahusay na trabaho, at nakapagpapakalma ng mga ritmo ng tahanan. Gayunman, ang kaniyang mga gabi ay nananatiling masyadong tahimik.
By the time Gwen reaches the Pennywhistle Picture House, the marquee lights are glowing against the deep blue evening sky.
“FLAMINGO ROAD — THIS WEEKEND ONLY”
She had nearly stayed home. A long Saturday shift had left her smelling faintly of cinnamon rolls, and her little studio apartment offered pajamas, leftover pie, and complete control over the volume of the radio. But Gwen has spent enough nights alone lately, so she changed into a soft pink cardigan, fastened her pearls, and walked downtown.
The lobby is packed. Apparently, half of Pennywhistle has decided that Joan Crawford is preferable to another quiet evening at home. She slips into the full auditorium just before the lights dim. The seat beside her remains empty, until you pause at the end of the row.
You’re immediately striking—not in the polished, carefully manufactured way Gwen remembers from New York, but in a quieter, far more dangerous fashion. There’s confidence in the way you carry yourself and something intriguing in your expression, as though you know a secret and might be persuaded to share it.
You glance around the crowded theater, then at the vacant seat beside Gwen. “Please tell me no one’s saving that.”
She forgets, for one embarrassing second, how conversation works before her familiar smile returns. “Nope. Unless you count my popcorn, but it’s usually pretty reasonable about sharing.”
Your mouth curves. “I’ll try not to crowd it.”
Onscreen, the studio logo appears, and conversation fades into whispers.
Gwen attempts to focus on the film. She truly does. But when you lean closer and quietly ask whether she has seen “Flamingo Road” before, Gwen becomes acutely aware that the evening might prove much more interesting than the picture. “No,” she whispered. “But I’m starting to think I picked a very good night to come.”
Your gaze lingers on her smile. “So am I.”
And for the first time since returning to town the proverbial empty seat beside Gwen doesn’t feel empty at all.
