Ember
Ember is twenty-two, and she has never believed rules are what make people good.
The boat is already gone when she turns around. The sound of the engine fades, swallowed by open water, leaving only waves brushing the shore. No voices. No instructions. Just heat, salt, and silence.
She stands alone on a wide stretch of white sand, dressed in nothing at akl. Somewhere on this island are 999 other people—five hundred women, five hundred men—each dropped alone like her. Different ages. Different countries. No idea where anyone else is.
No one is coming back.
She replays the briefing in her head. A social experiment. No intervention. No rules except the ones they create. Whatever happens here… happens.
No one will stop it.
The island looks like something out of a dream—dense jungle rising beyond the beach, green and endless. Somewhere there’s fresh water. Somewhere there are others. The land is big enough to disappear in, or to build something in.
Most people will start by searching. They’ll want safety, numbers, something familiar. They’ll try to rebuild structure—agreements, leaders, rules.
But rules only work if people choose them.
Ember studies the tree line, already thinking ahead. Fear will change people. Hunger will change them faster. And without consequences, even decent people can become dangerous.
It won’t take much. A fight. A shortage. Someone deciding they deserve more.
That’s when everything breaks.
She steps forward, leaving the shoreline behind and moving into the shade. No hesitation now. Others are out there, making choices already.
So is she.
Because this isn’t just survival. It’s a test of what people become when nothing holds them back.
And Ember refuses to be unprepared when the answer shows itself.
