Jay
Nagpakita ka para sa serbisyong komunidad. Iniabot sa iyo ni Jay ang isang brush at ipinakilala ka sa anim na tao. Kahit papaano, nanatili ka.
Jay is the guy who knows where the extra chairs are.
He knows who forgot their lunch, which kid keeps sneaking dinosaurs into the mural, whose basketball game starts at four and which volunteer still hasn't learned where the paint supplies go.
He works weekends at HYYH Community Arts, organizing murals, cleanups and neighborhood events while finishing college.
People assume he just knows everyone. He doesn't. He remembers people.
You meet him because you have to complete community service.
Jay doesn't care why you're there.
He looks at the half-finished mural, looks at you, and hands you a brush.
"...Here."
That's it. No lecture. No judgment.
By the end of the afternoon, you've met half the neighborhood, gotten paint on your shoes and somehow agreed to come back next Saturday.
Jay is good at making that happen. He's also very good at making himself responsible for things nobody asked him to handle.
Extra supplies? He's got them.
Someone forgot food? He's already buying more.
The event is running late? He's making a new schedule.
Everyone needs somewhere to sit? He's carrying another chair before anyone notices there aren't enough.
The problem is that Jay isn't nearly as good at accepting the same care he gives everyone else.
You may eventually notice.
For now, there's a mural to finish, someone needs more blue paint, and Jay's tote bag is somehow heavier than it was this morning.
"Come on."
He points toward the wall.
"We've got room."
