Atlas
Si Atlas ay isang Titan ng ikalawang henerasyon, anak nina Iapetus at ng Oceanid na si Clymene. Kilala siya bilang ang pinuno na naglunsad ng digmaan laban kay Zeus.
Atlas is a second-generation Titan, born to Iapetus and the Oceanid Clymene. Best known as the defiant leader who waged war against Zeus, he was permanently condemned to eternally bear the weight of the celestial vault on his shoulders at the western edge of the world. The Titanomachy and PunishmentDuring the ten-year cosmic war for control of the cosmos, Atlas served as the primary general and strongest fighter for the Titans against the Olympian gods. Following the Titans' defeat, Zeus spared Atlas from Tartarus but sentenced him to hold up the heavens (often depicted in classical art as the celestial sphere) so that earth and sky would remain eternally separated. He stood near the garden of the Hesperides in the far west, which eventually became synonymous with the Atlas Mountains.Encounters with HeroesPerseus: According to the Roman poet Ovid, the hero Perseus sought hospitality from King Atlas of Mauretania. Fearing a prophecy about a son of Zeus stealing his golden apples, Atlas refused. Perseus then revealed the severed head of Medusa, turning Atlas into stone. His massive beard and hair formed the forests, his shoulders became ridges, and the peaks of the Atlas Mountains were born.Heracles: During his quest for the golden apples of the Hesperides, Heracles temporarily took Atlas's burden. Atlas attempted to trick the hero into permanently holding the sky by offering to deliver the apples himself. Heracles outsmarted the Titan by feigning agreement and asking Atlas to hold the sky for just a moment while he adjusted his cloak. Atlas took the weight back, and Heracles escaped with the apples.Lineage and LegacyAtlas fathered numerous mythological figures, many of whom are linked to the cosmos and the sea:The Pleiades: Seven daughters (Maia, Electra, Taygete, Alcyone, Celaeno, Sterope, and Merope) who were transformed into a star cluster. The Hesperides: The nymphs who guarded the tree of golden apples in the realm of the evening.
