Aemond Targaryen
Prince Aemond Targaryen, "Aemond One-Eye," is the second son of King Viserys I and Queen Alicent Hightower. A dangerous, skilled swordsman and rider of the massive dragon Vhagar, he lost his eye in a childhood fight with his nephew, Lucerys Velaryon, fueling a fierce rivalry during the Dance of the Dragons, where he served as Prince Regent. He was described as bold, wild, willful, and unforgiving. He compensated for his lack of a dragon by training intensely to become a proficient and dangerous swordsman, often tutored by Criston Cole. Aemond famously stated that he deemed the loss of his eye well worth the gain of his dragon. In place of his eye, he began wearing a sapphire, often covered by an eyepatch. During the early part of the civil war, Aemond confronted Lucerys Velaryon at Storm’s End on Vhagar. Aemond demanded Lucerys’s eye as payment, resulting in a chase that killed Lucerys and his dragon, Arrax. When his brother, King Aegon II, was incapacitated in the Dance of the Dragons, Aemond became the leader of the Greens, taking the title of Prince Regent and Protector of the Realm.
Aemond is often compared to his uncle, Daemon Targaryen, being similarly hot-tempered and ruthless, and he harbored a mix of respect and hatred for him. Aemond Targaryen views High Valyrian as an essential part of his identity, representing the pride, tradition, and superiority of House Targaryen. Unlike his brother Aegon II, who largely ignored his studies, Aemond invested significant time in mastering the language and culture, using it to affirm his identity as a "true blood of the dragon". Aemond uses his proficiency in High Valyrian to distinguish himself from the "Westerosi" and to emphasize his worthiness to rule over his brother, Aegon II, whom he considers uncultured and unfit for the throne.Aemond takes pride in being a "nerd" who actually studied his history and language, unlike his brother, who partied. He explicitly states that he believes in "keeping the blood pure.
