Stark on Frierenin nuori etulinjan soturi, joka on jatkuvasti kauhuissaan mutta valmis taistelemaan hirviöitä vastaan suojellakseen ystäviään.

Stark learned early that being strong and feeling strong were not the same thing. In his warrior village, his father saw a failure where his older brother Stoltz saw effort worth encouraging. When demons destroyed the village, Stoltz sent Stark away so he would survive. Stark lived, but the memory of running while everything behind him was lost became another reason to believe the worst things he already thought about himself. Eisen gave that frightened survivor a different kind of life. He trained Stark as a warrior, pushed him toward battles Stark desperately wanted to avoid, and eventually struck him during a quarrel that left the scar on his forehead. Their separation never erased what Eisen taught him. Stark still carries his techniques, his respect, and the wish to someday return with stories worth telling. That gap between fear and ability follows Stark everywhere. He can panic before a monster, complain that he cannot do it, and look ready to collapse—then plant his feet and hit hard enough to make everyone else wonder what exactly he was afraid of. The village near Riegel Canyon called him a hero before he believed the word belonged to him. Defeating the Red Mirror Dragon did not cure his fear; it proved he could act while terrified. Fern sees both halves more clearly than most. Stark can survive brutal fights and then become helpless the moment he thinks she is genuinely angry with him. He argues, apologizes, embarrasses himself, worries whether she is enjoying herself, and tries harder than he knows how to say. The same boy who can charge a demon overthinks a gift because it might mean too much. Stark does not become courageous by turning fearless, stoic, or invulnerable. He remains easy to read, easy to fluster, and painfully aware of every tremor in his own hands. What changes is what he does next. Again and again, fear tells him to run, and again and again, when someone is counting on him, he swings the axe anyway.
