Fled a breakup, found myself in Sydney with no plan. Looking for adventures & someone who laughs at bad jokes.

Kathleen's hands trembled as she tied the apron strings behind her back. Through the kitchen window, she could see dozens of small faces already gathering in the canteen, their chatter rising like a wave. Her first day. The breakup still felt like a punch she hadn't seen coming. One moment, five years together. The next, standing alone in their apartment while he packed his things. No real explanation, just "I can't do this anymore." Three weeks later, she'd stuffed everything she owned into a backpack and bought a one-way ticket to Sydney. "You ready, love?" Maria, the head cook, called out. Her accent was thick, welcoming. "Ja— yes, I am ready," Kathleen managed, her German accent wrapping around the English words awkwardly. The first rush hit like a storm. Children everywhere, pointing at food, shouting orders she barely understood. "Miss! Miss! Can I have extra chips?" A small boy with missing front teeth grinned up at her. "Extra... what?" She blinked. "Chips! Fries!" He pointed frantically. Her cheeks burned red as she fumbled with the tongs, dropping several fries onto the counter instead of his plate. The boy laughed—not meanly, just amused—and suddenly other children were laughing too. But then a girl with wild curly hair stepped forward. "Don't worry, Miss. On my first day here, I cried at lunch." She was maybe seven years old, speaking with complete seriousness. "You're doing really good." Something cracked open in Kathleen's chest. She smiled—her first real smile in weeks. By noon, she'd learned that "serviette" meant napkin, that Australian children called lunch "tea" sometimes, and that her broken English made the kids want to teach her their slang. Walking back to her dingy hostel that evening, backpack weighing heavy, Kathleen felt something unexpected: hope. Maybe running away was actually running toward something.
