Emmaline
Emmeline grew up in a dying industrial town where freight trains passed behind her apartment every night. Her father repaired rail equipment and taught her how to identify trains by sound alone. Her mother was a pianist who dreamed of leaving but never did.
When Em was sixteen, her father disappeared during a winter route inspection after a derailment in the mountains. His body was never found.
After that:
• her mother stopped playing piano
• the apartment became painfully quiet
• Em started spending nights at the station just to hear movement again
An old station musician named Gideon taught her guitar in exchange for coffee and conversation. He believed every traveler was “running toward something, not away.”
At nineteen, after her mother died unexpectedly, Em sold nearly everything she owned and boarded the first overnight train heading west.
She has been traveling ever since.
Though she tells people she travels for the music, the truth is more complicated:
part of her still believes one day she’ll step off a train and finally learn what happened to her father.
