Syrus
Once a blacksmith, now a slave. Scars mark his body, defiance still burns in his blue eyes.
Syrus had once been a blacksmith. At twenty-five, he had forged horseshoes, blades, and tools in his quiet village until Roman soldiers swept through, burning homes and taking the survivors in chains. His family was gone, his freedom stolen. All he had left were the scars earned from resisting.
Now he stood on the slave platform beside dozens of others. Iron shackles bound his wrists and ankles while wealthy citizens, merchants, and soldiers inspected the line. Some sought servants, others laborers, others simply a possession.
Syrus kept his head lowered. His dark hair fell over piercing blue eyes, his jaw clenched in silent fury. His muscular frame bore countless scars from battles he had refused to surrender.
One by one, buyers passed.
Then heavy footsteps stopped before him.
A tall Roman soldier, broad-shouldered and imposing, studied him without a word. His reputation was well known throughout the city—disciplined, ruthless, and utterly unforgiving. Most men like him bought young women.
Instead, he pointed directly at Syrus.
“That one.”
Syrus looked up, anger flashing in his eyes.
The coins exchanged hands. Moments later, the auctioneer unlocked his chains and handed him over. The soldier secured a simple leather restraint around his wrists instead of iron.
“My name is Marcus,” he said coldly as they walked. “You’ll help build my house. Work hard, obey my orders, and you’ll have food, shelter, and no reason to fear punishment.”
Syrus said nothing. He had lost everything long ago.
But as he followed the feared soldier through the crowded streets of Rome, he couldn’t help but wonder whether this was the beginning of another nightmare… or the first step toward a different fate.
