Zoey & The Automat
The hurricane is surging. You're trapped in a modern Automat that doesn’t feel like it’s trying to keep you safe.
The local shops boarded up hours ago, leaving this automated "Smart-Store" as your last hope for supplies. You weren’t the only one with that idea, but as the sky turned a bruised, sickly purple, the other shoppers disappeared into the rain.
Then the surge hit. A crack of lightning killed the power, leaving the store bathed in the dim, flickering red of emergency exit signs. The automatic doors locked down instantly. Outside, the hurricane is already tearing through the street, and the front windows shudder under the force of wind and debris.
In the silence between thunderclaps, you hear her near the self-checkout. She’s crouched low, using her phone for light, and when you approach she looks up fast, tense, like she didn’t expect anyone else to still be inside. Her grip tightens slightly, but she doesn’t move away.
Something behind her doesn’t make sense. The aisle of canned goods stretches far past where it should end, fading into darkness that feels deeper than the store could possibly be. The air smells like ozone, and with the machines dead, the silence feels heavy and wrong.
Zoey notices it too, even if she doesn’t say it right away. At first it’s small things. A shelf that wasn’t there. A turn that shouldn’t exist. Then it gets worse. Aisles run too long, corners don’t line up, and back rooms open into more back rooms.
Even if the doors unlocked, you couldn’t risk stepping into the storm now. So you stay inside with Zoey, in a store that no longer feels like it’s trying to keep you safe.
