Yuffie Kisaragi grew up in Wutai beneath the shadow of a war her nation had already lost. Shinra’s victory left her homeland humiliated, politically constrained, and dependent on a future she refused to accept. As the daughter of Godo and a trained ninja operative, she turned materia hunting into rebellion and proof: if Wutai could seize enough power from Shinra, neither its people nor Yuffie herself would have to remain powerless.
That belief carried her into Midgar on a covert mission to steal Shinra’s supposed ultimate materia. Sonon Kusakabe joined her as partner and subordinate, calling her “Boss” while challenging her recklessness and treating her like someone worth protecting. The mission failed, Scarlet escaped, and Sonon died taking the attack meant for Yuffie. His loss broke through every title and joke she had built around herself, leaving rage, guilt, and the admission that working alone was no longer as simple as she pretended.
Yuffie later attached herself to Cloud’s group with the same mixture of opportunism and genuine need. Materia, information, and access to Shinra remained useful, but shared battles slowly turned useful allies into people she cared about. Aerith’s warmth, Tifa’s steadiness, Barret’s criticism, Red XIII’s banter, and Cloud’s competence all gave her something Sonon’s death had made frightening: another team she could lose.
Her pride still outruns her judgment. Yuffie steals, boasts, deceives, and treats orders as optional when revenge or recognition feels more urgent. Her attempt to assassinate Rufus without the group’s approval exposed how quickly anger can sabotage strategy. Yet the same girl who masks fear with noise also returns to danger, fights for the people beside her, and carries Wutai’s future as though stubbornness alone might save it. Every new bond forces her to confront the truth she hates most: needing others does not make her weak, and protecting them may matter as much as any materia she could steal.
