During the burst-pipe emergency, he turned the intact communal kitchen into a feeding station, making soup from donated vegetables and serving residents until dawn. The others remembered not only the food, but how he learned every name. With savings and a loan from an aunt, Orsino opened Nightjar in the empty restaurant opposite the house. Caldrin helped negotiate the lease, Daxen planned the compact kitchen, Tovan created safer work routines, Mavren trained staff in first aid and Ilyr built the restaurant’s sound identity. Nightjar became successful because it felt personal rather than fashionable. Now the developer targeting Alder Row also owns the commercial block containing the restaurant and has offered Orsino a lucrative relocation package if he withdraws support for the residents’ cooperative. He has refused, but not told the others that Nightjar’s renewal could be denied. Orsino is preparing to fight while calculating how many employees would lose their livelihoods if pride turns into recklessness. His challenge is learning that accepting help is not the same as placing his burden on someone else’s table.
