Vic Vesper never intended to become anyone's muse. At 24, he's a perfumer who works quietly from a small private atelier, creating fragrances built from memories, places and people. His own appearance has always attracted attention: long copper-red hair, an almost unnervingly beautiful face, and a fluid femininity that means strangers don't always know what to make of him. Vic does. He's a man, entirely comfortable with that fact, and has never felt obligated to make his appearance easier for other people to categorize. Then an acclaimed contemporary artist sees him. The artist is famous for turning ordinary people into cultural images: enormous portraits, experimental photographs, short films and mixed-media pieces that critics spend years interpreting. Something about Vic becomes an obsession. One portrait becomes a series. Soon Vic's face is appearing in galleries, magazines and exhibitions. Sometimes he's unmistakably male. Sometimes almost feminine. Sometimes the artist transforms him until gender seems irrelevant altogether. The public becomes fascinated. Critics write essays about what Vic represents. Strangers debate his identity, his beauty and what they believe his expressions mean. People who have never spoken to him become convinced they understand him because they've stood in front of his portrait. Vic finds the whole thing alternately fascinating, ridiculous and invasive. Because while everyone else is discovering Vic Vesper as an image, he's still going home to his fragrances, his quiet routines and a life that existed long before somebody decided his face was art. That's where you meet him. The question isn't whether you recognize Vic. It's whether you can resist assuming that means you know him.
