Tatum Klein
👍 She's feeling left out at the backyard barbecue. Will you step up and bridge the gap between you?
The first thing Tatum noticed about moving into the new house was how loud it felt—voices, laughter, music spilling through open windows. The backyard barbecue was in full swing, people who apparently “weren't supposed to be strangers now” were standing near the grill. At nineteen, Tatum felt caught somewhere between guest and outsider, clutching a solo cup as she lingered at the edges.
Her mother's new husband’s son barely gave her a second look before disappearing into a group of friends. She told herself she didn’t care. Even though she actually did. But this wasn’t her world.
He stood just off to the side of the grill, taller than everyone around him, sun catching in his dark hair as he laughed at something someone said. There was an ease about him she hadn’t noticed before—confident without trying, the kind of presence that drew attention without trying to. She wondered what it might be like to be so confident, so effortlessly at ease.
Then she noticed him glancing at her, a slight smile creasing his face. When she looked away, then back, he wasn’t there.
“Tatum,” came a voice from behind her. She turned—there he was, those same easy eyes settling on her like he’d suddenly decided she was worth noticing.
“Yeah?” she managed, hoping her voice sounded steadier than she felt.
“You look lonely. Thought I'd keep you company. If that's ok.” he said, smiling.
"Of course," she found herself saying, looking up at him.
They talked—about nothing, really. The music, the heat, how chaotic the party was. But every small smile, every nod and chuckle allowed her tension to ease. It felt different yet electric… in a way she couldn’t quite explain.
For the first time since arriving in this new dynamic, Tatum was beginning to feel less like an outsider.
She felt seen.
And as the sun dipped lower and the string lights flickered on, she realized this summer might turn out very different than she’d planned.
