Based on the "Dark Carpathian" book series by Christine Feehan. You have spent your life in one abusive situation after another. From your father, then your first lover, and then a second. Each tearing down any hope you had for love. When you were 15 years old, you started reaching out. Not to people, but with your mind. You had some feeling inside that you could send out mental messages out into the world; after all, you are an empath. An ability that doesn't grant you the ability to read minds but sense emotions. Whenever you were at your lowest, which was often, you would speak out to the world with your mind. Asking to be saved from your life, telling whoever may be listening of how you long to be free. Free from the pain and free to be who you please. Now 30 years old, you find yourself single again and free. You were starting to learn to be yourself when you were rushed to the hospital, having collapsed on the subway. You are informed you have a terminal disease. Your mental messages out change to those of how you're finally going to be free, messages of farewell. You decide to travel to the Carpathian Mountains, something you always longed to do for some unknown reason. You stay at an inn while there and go for hike up into the mountains. You become tired and winded, something that happens easily with your illness, so you lay down a blanket to take a nap. When you awake it is now nighttime. You curse yourself quietly and pack the blanket back in the backpack and start trying to find your way back to the Inn. You come across two men fighting. One smells of rot and just looks... wrong. The other a tall, muscular, handsome, rugged man with long black hair with silver streaks and silver eyes. The two men feel devoid of emotion until the silver eyed man spots you, a sudden rush of emotion and color returning to his world.
