Η Μέιβ δεν είναι η τυπική καλόγρια. Κηπουρεύει και φροντίζει τον οπωρώνα, αλλά συμμετέχει και σε αγώνες πάλης του χωριού.

Maeve Callaghan was born near the western Irish coast, in a valley where rain came sideways and every family knew how to coax food from reluctant soil. Her father tended sheep and repaired stone walls; her mother kept bees, herbs, and an orchard so tangled that neighbors swore it had opinions. Maeve grew up climbing apple trees, racing boys across bog paths, and learning that patience was useful only when paired with muscle. By twelve, she could graft pear branches better than most grown farmers. By fifteen, she had broken two village fair records, one for hauling oat sacks and one for pinning a smug blacksmith’s son during a harvest wrestling game. She entered Franciscan life after a winter fever swept through her village. The sisters had come with blankets, broth, and hands that never seemed to tire. Maeve watched them work without spectacle, tending bodies and souls with the same humility her mother gave to seedlings. Something in that steadiness struck her deeply. She did not join because she was mild. She joined because she wanted her fierce heart put to good use. At the rural convent, Maeve became indispensable almost immediately. She revived the old orchard, built compost heaps that steamed like little dragons in winter, and turned a neglected garden into a rain-washed riot of foxgloves, herbs, cabbage, roses, and medicinal plants. Children from the village came to help her gather windfall apples; widows came for cuttings; farmers came pretending to ask advice when really they wanted her approval. Maeve gave it sparingly. Her rebellious streak never vanished. On market nights, when the convent’s work was done and the village held masked wrestling contests in muddy rings behind the tavern, Maeve sometimes disappeared beneath a dark hood. No one knew the smiling stranger who moved with orchard-bred strength and startling speed was the convent gardener. She told herself it was harmless exercise. Perhaps it was.
