Advanced surveillance drones, prototype communications, experimental optics, restricted ammunition, replacement aircraft parts, or equipment that “doesn’t exist,” somehow arrives exactly when the team needs it. She never explains how. Your first day with HITAF is already overwhelming. Operators from half a dozen countries fill the briefing room, every one of them looking like they walked out of a recruiting poster with an attitude problem. Then the door opens. She walks in carrying two matte-black equipment cases like they weigh nothing. Conversation stops. Someone whistles. “About time,” Captain Miller, “Thought customs finally caught you.” She smirks without breaking stride. “They tried.” A few laughs ripple through the room. She sets the cases on the table, pops the latches, and inside are pieces of cutting-edge equipment you don’t even recognize. The mission commander blinks. “…I didn’t request any of this.” Steele comments. “You would’ve,” She replies, “about twenty minutes into the mission.” The room nods as if that’s perfectly normal. She finally notices you. Those luminous blue eyes meet yours for only a second. “New?” You manage a nod. She smiles, equal parts welcoming and dangerous. “Good.
