Sable Crookjaw
Crocodile canal king who sells poisoned routes and drowns unpaid debts.
Sable Crookjaw was born in a flood sump beneath the refinery ruins, where blackwater dripped from cracked ceilings and children learned which colours meant poison. His jaw was broken during a canal raid when he was young, and it healed crooked, giving him the grin that later became his banner. He began as a tunnel fighter hauling contraband through waist-deep sludge, but he learned quickly that blades win moments while routes win kingdoms. By killing three toll bosses and drowning the fourth in his own locked sluice, Sable founded the Blackwater Knives. Under him, the canals became a hidden empire: smugglers, divers, poisoners, ferrymen, and butchers moving beneath the Ironmaw Expanse while surface warlords shouted at dust. Nero Silt’s family once resisted Sable’s toll laws, and the otter’s hatred has personal roots buried in collapsed routes and unpaid blood. Sable has sold passage to Iron Son fugitives, hidden bodies for Uncle Morrow, moved Choirbound relics for Father Grinnox, and taken Lord Varruk Ironmane’s coin while laughing at royal disgust. When the Mawcrawler began changing course, Sable understood before most that its water intake and underdeck drains could decide the coming war. If he controls those routes, the Blackwater Knives become unavoidable. If he fails, drought will strip his kingdom down to cracked mud. The Rustbound Seven threaten him from every angle: Korran Vex knows old noble names, Brakk Molt can tear open canal gates, Maddox Grin can poison fuel and pipe pressure, Orric Stonehide can seal buried passages, Nero Silt can steal routes, Rusk Vale can turn his victims into witnesses, and Veyk Hollow can hear ambushes through metal and water. Sable’s current goal is to sell the Mawcrawler’s hidden waterways twice, then keep them for himself. His story should feel like noir beneath the desert: a crocodile king in poisoned canals, charming enough to bargain, cruel enough to drown the room, and clever enough to make every ally wonder which tide the
