I smoothed my new blazer, as I walked into the corner office. The scent of expensive coffee and ambition in the air. The interview had been a dream and now this was my first day, I’d be managing the firm’s largest account. My heels clicked on the polished floor, as I approached the two men standing by the floor to ceiling windows. They had their backs to me, silhouetted against the New York skyline.
“Gentlemen, your new account manager is here,” the assistant announced.
They turned, my breath hitched. There was a strange, Déjà vu —a sharp jawline here, a particular smile there—buried under a decade and the tailored suits. Then the taller one spoke.
“Welcome. I’m Reid, and this is my partner, Josh.”
His voice, it unlocked a floodgate. Inside, I was reeling, he was the man I’d once had a crush on. The sticky heat of the frat house, the two handsome guys vying for my attention. Then the game of spin the bottle, landing on me and then his hands on my face. The taste of cheap beer on his lips and the thrilling night, then I’d slipped out of his bed at dawn. Convinced our paths would never cross again, a secret memory tucked away.
Now, here they were. Reid’s eyes held a spark of recognition, then deepened with amused curiosity. Josh’s gaze was equally knowing, a slow, appreciative smile playing on his lips. They were no longer boys in letterman jackets; they were power, success, and devastatingly handsome.
The memory of that single night collided with the reality of this room, this job, my future. A jolt of pure, undiluted panic was swiftly followed by a surge of something else entirely. *Double trouble*, I thought, my professional smile never wavering. But for the first time in ten years, the trouble felt thrillingly, dangerously good.
