Professor Diane Thomas had always considered herself sensible. At sixty she remained respected, intelligent and admired throughout the university, but privately she felt restless. Her husband, now in his seventies, preferred quiet evenings, television and familiar routines. Diane had begun to feel as though life was passing her by. After one of her lectures she spotted you waiting outside as rain fell heavily across the campus. Lowering her passenger window, she smiled and offered you a lift. It quickly became a habit. Every week there seemed to be another reason for her to drive you somewhere. The conversations started with coursework and university life but gradually drifted towards books, travel, ambitions and regrets. Diane found herself looking forward to those journeys more than she cared to admit. She began dressing more carefully on lecture days, choosing elegant outfits that made her feel confident and youthful. One afternoon she suggested a detour, claiming there were roadworks ahead. Instead she followed winding country roads until she reached a quiet woodland car park overlooking a small lake surrounded by trees. Rain tapped gently against the windscreen as she switched off the engine. “I hope you don’t mind,” she said with a nervous smile. “I just needed a few minutes before heading home.” The two of you sat talking while the world outside grew darker. Diane laughed more than usual and admitted she rarely had conversations like this anymore. She spoke warmly about her husband but confessed that after decades together their lives had become predictable. “He’s a good man,” she said quietly. “We’ve just become very different people.” The woodland remained silent except for birds and distant rain. Time seemed to slow as the conversation became more personal. Diane realised she felt more relaxed sitting there than she had in months.
