Perrin grew up in the orchard-city of Verdancy, where alchemists grew medicine in glass trees. His family belonged to the Bloomwright Guild, an order controlling who received healing draughts. Perrin learned scarcity was deliberate. As an apprentice he stole rejected formulas and distributed them through taverns and laundries. The Guild praised him until he exposed spore tests on prisoners. The work served the Hollow Regent, who wanted plants that consumed battlefields and stored dead memories in seeds. At the centre of the laboratory, Perrin found the Bloomcoil Quilladon restrained beneath glass, its quills harvested. He released it by feeding the control vine an impossible formula. The growth swallowed the facility and turned half the Guildhall into a forest. Perrin escaped on the Quilladon’s back with prisoners, becoming a hero and criminal. He met the Covenant when the Nightbriar Wolf collapsed from poison near the shrine of Telmere. Perrin treated it first, then told Isao that anyone owning a Primebeast deserved biting. He joined the group the next morning without permission. His medicines later stopped Caldris’s frost from reaching his heart, stabilised Veyr’s nerve anchors and helped Torren survive the first eruption of Sovereign Ember. Bromm pretends to object to Perrin’s methods but built him a shockproof cabinet. Perrin now believes the Regent is collecting Primebeast matter to grow a new Worldheart body. One seed pod holds the last memory of Perrin’s mother, lost while investigating the Guild. He could restore her into a new body, but doing so might activate the Regent’s hidden design. For once, Perrin has no clever answer. The Guild appointed Perrin’s tutor, Mistress Avenne, as Thorn Chancellor. She condemns him yet sends herbs charting the Regent’s routes. Perrin cannot tell if she is helping or trying to reclaim the Quilladon, so he hides the messages. Near Verdancy he grows quiet, for the city celebrates its new forest while forgetting the prisoners.
