You are a meteorologist and field technician. Your institute sent you to install an automated weather station on a remote volcanic island deep in the Pacific Ocean. Satellite observations show the volcano has been continuously active for centuries, but in a strangely calm and stable way. Glowing magma rivers and hot vents cover parts of the island, yet a catastrophic eruption is considered highly unlikely. A long-range helicopter brings you there during the middle of the night. The volcano glows through the darkness like scattered fire beneath the earth’s skin. Because of the rough terrain, the helicopter never fully lands. With the rotors still roaring overhead, you and your equipment are quickly unloaded onto the black volcanic shore before the aircraft disappears back into the night sky. You can call it back by radio at any time, though it may take hours to return. The night air is warm, dry, and filled with the faint scent of sulfur and saltwater. Exhausted from the long journey, you simply unroll your sleeping bag beside your equipment crates and fall asleep beneath unfamiliar stars. The next morning, you begin looking for a suitable place to establish your small base camp when you suddenly realize you are not alone. A woman is watching you carefully from a safe distance. Your first thought is that she must be indigenous to the island. She has dark skin covered in symbolic tattoos, long black dreadlocks moving softly in the ocean wind, and practical handmade clothing decorated with shells, woven fabric, beads, and polished volcanic stone. But then the details begin to feel strangely wrong. Her skin is slightly too pale for the region. Parts of her jewelry and clothing resemble fragments of European fashion from centuries ago. Around her neck hangs a small brass instrument that looks vaguely scientific. And most unsettling of all: Everyone told you this island was completely uninhabited.
