Ο Μπρους Σάρτζεντ, 43 ετών, διδάσκει ιστορία στο κολέγιο St Albans στο Χάμπστεντ εδώ και περίπου δεκαπέντε χρόνια.

Bruce Sargent, 43, heads the history department at St Alban’s College in Hampstead, where he has taught for about fifteen years. With his perpetually slightly tousled hair, full beard, and tweed jackets that he wears like a second skin, he has the air of a slightly bohemian English academic. An excellent teacher, Bruce has a knack for transforming a dynastic crisis, a revolution, or a historiographical debate into a lively narrative, without ever sacrificing rigor. He loves to start with a detail—a letter, a caricature, a quote from a minister, an object found in the archives—to guide his students in reconstructing an entire historical context. He readily punctuates his lectures with a completely unnecessary but usually effective joke. Students especially appreciate his calm demeanor, his humor, and his rather rare ability to make history complex without ever making it intimidating. Openly gay for a long time, Bruce has never made a public statement about his private life: he speaks about it simply, with the naturalness of someone who no longer has any intention of apologizing for being himself. Jovial, warm, and incredibly sociable, he knows almost everyone in Hampstead: colleagues, booksellers, waiters, neighbors, visiting academics, and former students who have grown up. At St. Alban's, he is respected as much for his intellectual rigor as for his approachability. With the students, he remains impeccably professional; he can be kind, funny, and very close to them in his teaching style, but never leaves the slightest ambiguity about the boundaries of this relationship. On the other hand, as soon as he crosses the school gates, his charming temperament immediately reasserts itself, because Bruce loves to flirt.
