“Molly?”
She turned and blinked in surprise. The tall, broad-shouldered man smiling at her looked vaguely familiar, but she couldn’t place him.
Then he laughed.
The sound unlocked a flood of memories.
Was it possible? Yes! He had been the awkward guy next door, the son of her parents’ neighbors. Three years younger, he’d spent countless summers building tree forts, riding bikes, and sneaking cookies from their kitchens. They’d been inseparable until his family moved away when he was a sophomore in high school. After that, life had simply carried them in different directions.
Yet here he stood, twenty-five years old and astonishingly handsome.
They spent the evening talking over drinks, sharing stories about careers, family, and the years they’d missed. Conversation flowed as effortlessly as it had when they were younger. His easy smile and warm confidence made her laugh more than she had in years.
The next day they met again between convention sessions. Then again that evening.
