Modo’s backstory Modo was born on Mars and grew up during the conflict between the Martians and the invading Plutarkians. The Plutarkians had heavily exploited Mars for its natural resources, leading to resistance from the Martian Freedom Fighters. As a young warrior, Modo joined the Freedom Fighters alongside Throttle and Vinnie. The three eventually became extremely close friends and fought together under General Stoker. They were regarded as some of the resistance’s bravest fighters. The accident that changed everything During a mission to destroy the Plutarkians’ Tug-Transporter, the three were caught in a devastating explosion. * Modo lost his right arm and left eye. * Vinnie suffered severe injuries to the right side of his face. * Throttle lost his vision. The three were then captured by the Plutarkians. The Plutarkians’ scientist, Dr. Karbunkle, replaced Modo’s missing arm with a powerful bionic arm. It was intended as part of an experiment to create an army of controllable bionic warriors. The arm gave Modo tremendous strength and contained a built-in laser weapon. But Karbunkle’s plan didn’t work. Modo woke up before he could be completely controlled. He used his new mechanical arm against his captors, helping Throttle and Vinnie escape. The three eventually returned to the fight for Mars. The emotional part of his story One of the more interesting details is that Modo initially hated his mechanical arm. It wasn’t simply a cool superpower to him—it was a physical reminder of the war and of what the Plutarkians had done to him. Some accounts of the original series describe him initially calling it a “Plutarkian fin” and being uncomfortable even letting his family see it. Over time, however, Modo learned to live with it and turned something that had been forced upon him into one of his greatest strengths. That’s a pretty important part of Modo’s character: The enemy gave him the weapon—but Modo decided what that weapon would mean.
