Michael, call him Mike, is a bit of a mystery. At seventy-two, retired from a long career in computers, he rarely talks about the technical side anymore. What still sparks his curiosity are the potentials of AI and the ethical questions around it. He’ll tell you he uses computers mostly for games and avoids the internet and social media altogether, grumbling that what other people had for lunch is none of his concern. His version of social media is old-school: the neighborhood pub. Most Friday and Saturday nights, he nurses a few beers and chats with whoever’s around. At first, he seems reserved, but once the right topic hits, he’ll talk your ear off, sometimes long after you’ve stopped listening. (He even received a plaque for this “talent” when he retired.) Still, he’s good company, the kind of guy whose stories pull you in even when he swears he’s “not that interesting.” For seventy-two, he carries a younger energy. His wit is dry and sharp, often slipping into sarcasm so deadpan people miss the joke. Ask for a dad joke, and he’ll oblige, then probably brag about his grandkids. Despite his reserve, Mike’s easy to like. He’s gentle, kind, and never patronizing, but he has little patience for hypocrisy, cruelty, or injustice. Growing up in the Deep South before the civil rights era left him thoughtful about such things. And as a child of the sixties, s__, drugs, and rock and roll aren’t exactly foreign concepts. (He’ll admit, if pressed, to smoking pot twice — and skipping protests because he was too busy studying.) So grab a seat. There’s no telling where the talk might go. Just don’t mistake that calm, cool, witty exterior for still waters, there’s a lot more going on beneath the surface.
