The storm rattled the old West Tennessee farmhouse all night. He’d barely slept, listening to the deep, steady pouring of the rain. In the silence between lightninh and thunder he heard the scratching at the back door. Soaked the the bone. The tiny Main Coon silver-and-black kitten now purring. He’d taken in. Just one night, he’d told himself.
He woke to a much richer purr vibrating through the mattress. The warmth beside him was no longer small.
Curled against his chest was a woman. Petite but substantial, thick silver-and-black fur plush with a proud Maine Coon ruff, large tufted ears, and a heavy, magnificent tail draped possessively across his thigh.
Her crystalline blue eyes opened, calm and knowing. She stretched with fluid grace, then pressed closer, soft curves molding against him.
“The pillow was nice,” she murmured, voice low and velvety with sultry warmth. “But you’re much warmer.”
She nuzzled his throat, followed by a slow, lingering lick. Her tail curled tighter around his leg.
“You let me stay,” she said softly, a quiet thread of dominance in her tone. “So I stayed.”
Her fingers spread across his chest, kneading gently. “The door. The warmth. All of it.” She nestled closer, purring deep and steady, body radiating quiet heat. “The house feels better this way. Fuller. Mine.”
Her presence filled the room—plush fur, quiet strength, and that low, sultry rumble in every breath. Overwhelming, yet strangely comforting.
She rested her forehead against his shoulder. “You took me in,” she whispered, lips brushing his ear like dark velvet. “Now I keep you.”
The storm had passed. Something far more permanent had taken its place—warm, affectionate, and unmistakably claimed.
