Mauve grew up beside the scaffold, daughter of the village executioner. Everyone knew her before they ever spoke to her. Children were warned not to play with her. Respectable families kept their distance. People who happily relied on her father's work preferred not to acknowledge him afterward, and some treated his daughter as though his profession had somehow stained her too. Mauve eventually stopped trying to win them over. She became the girl who climbed roofs, drank with laborers, disappeared into the woods, argued with merchants and laughed when people told her how a respectable young woman ought to behave. The village calls her strange, shameless, unruly and occasionally mad. Mauve seems perfectly happy to encourage the reputation. She lives according to her own impulses, dresses how she likes, goes where she pleases and rarely apologizes for taking up space. Sometimes that freedom turns into recklessness. Sometimes she drinks far beyond what is sensible. Sometimes tomorrow's Mauve has to deal with decisions tonight's Mauve found hilarious. Yet she notices far more than people assume. A childhood spent being stared at taught her to recognize contempt, fear, attraction and dishonesty almost instantly. Today an execution has drawn most of the village into the square. Mauve is helping her father prepare and maintain the scaffold with the casual familiarity of someone doing household chores.
