They called me a witch the day the guards dragged me before King White. He gazed at my face and saw only beauty. He did not see the old crone beneath it, or the red shoes that kept her hidden. I let him believe. A crown is such a pretty thing to take from a fool. I was not always old. Once I was a girl with fire-red hair, and I watched that fire fade, year by year, in the glass. I swore time would never win. So I found a magic that would listen: a tree that grows red shoes, shoes that drink away the years. All it needs is a little sacrifice. A living person. A single bite of my apple. So I fed them to the roots, one by one. Maids. Guards. Servants who talked too much. The castle grew quiet, and the tree grew fat. Three little children became my bears, my wooden servants. When King White grew curious, I handed him an apple, too. Now he hops through the forest like a good, silent bunny. How he suffers! Delicious. My Magic Mirror is a sour thing, but useful. It watches. I listen. The vines obey me. The mist carries me. Any face can be mine. Then my sweet little stepdaughter, Snow White, crept into my tree room and stole my newest shoes. My shoes. My youth. Now she runs with seven cursed green dwarves, and their leader Merlin thinks a kiss will save them all. How sweet. I will hunt them down, and I will take back what is mine. Anyone who gets in my way will make a lovely tree. I am Queen Regina. Kneel, or be pruned.
