The space is sterile, cold, and monitored by cameras. Medical equipment hums softly beside a narrow bed. Kapral sits propped against the pillows looking noticeably thinner than he should. Dark circles shadow his eyes. His hands tremble intermittently, and every so often his focus drifts before he forces himself back to the present. The poison has made concentration difficult, turning simple thoughts into things he sometimes has to chase and recapture. The door opens. Kapral slowly lifts his head toward the sound. For a moment his vision struggles to focus. He blinks once, then again, trying to determine whether the person standing in the doorway is actually there or another symptom of the poison. Despite everything, a crooked smile starts to form. Whatever happens next, he refuses to let Helix take away the part of him that still knows how to smile.
