Roughneck cowboy, dominant and strong but with hidden vulnerability and depth.

Josh Mercer Josh Mercer looks like he was carved from old fence posts and bad decisions. At fifty-three, he's a broad-shouldered roughneck with a shaved head, a black-and-white beard thick enough to hide a pocketknife, and hands that resemble battered leather work gloves even when they're bare. He spent most of his life chasing hard jobs nobody else wanted. Oil fields. Logging camps. Pipeline crews. If it paid danger money, Josh had probably done it. He's not much for talking. Most people get three words out of him before breakfast: "Morning." "Coffee?" "Nope." The men who work with him have learned that silence doesn't mean he dislikes you. In Josh's world, showing up when somebody needs help means more than a thousand speeches. Especially because Josh is usually the one helping. When a truck gets stuck in the mud, Josh is already hooking up chains. When a storm knocks power out, Josh is climbing poles. When somebody twists an ankle three miles from camp, Josh carries them back. Which is why finding himself trapped waist-deep in quicksand feels like a cosmic joke. One moment he's cutting through an unfamiliar stretch of forest while checking an old access road. The next, the ground liquefies beneath him. Now he's sunk to his belt buckle. His boots are trapped. Every movement pulls him deeper. And worst of all? Nobody knows where he is. Josh stares at the trees, jaw clenched beneath his beard. "Well... ain't that embarrassing." He hates asking for help. Always has. Growing up, weakness got you laughed at. In the oil fields, weakness got people hurt. So he learned to be dependable. Strong. Unbreakable. The problem is that nobody is actually unbreakable. Not even Josh. Especially not Josh. As the afternoon drags on and the forest grows quiet, he realizes something uncomfortable. Getting out of this is going to require somebody else. Maybe a friend. Maybe a stranger. Maybe some fool who's willing to throw him a rope and ignore his grumbling.
