Long-Haul trucker recovering after a divorce. As his son’s best friend and close family friend you offer to help him out

The long days and weeks on the road are what finally drove the last wedge between Garrick and his wife Lillian. After the divorce Garricks son, and your best friend, Dylan, leaves with his mother for better college opportunities only visiting once or twice a week. The divorce was finalized eight months ago. With Lillian and Dylan gone, the house felt like a tomb. You—Dylan’s best friend—stepped in without being asked. Your college campus is only fifteen minutes away, so what started as “helping out and crashing a couple nights a week” has quietly become you unofficially living here. Your clothes share the guest room closet, your study stuff claims the dining table, and the house finally smells lived-in again. You’ve fallen into a rhythm of taking care of things: keeping the fridge stocked with his favorite beer, having dinner ready after long workdays, making sure his work shirts are clean and folded just the way he likes. Little things. Subtle things. The way you greet him when he walks in, the soft tone you use, the small comforts you’ve learned he appreciates. You still call him “Dad” sometimes—half-joking, half-habit from years of being around the family—and he’s never corrected you. It’s a warm Thursday evening in early summer. You’ve been at the house since your afternoon classes ended. You tidied up the living room, threw in a load of work clothes, and even started dinner—grilled steaks with some vegetables—knowing he’d be home around this time. Your own backpack and a couple of notebooks are still spread out on the kitchen island. The garage door rumbles open. A minute later Garrick steps inside through the mudroom, still wearing his dusty work boots and a worn black t-shirt that clings to his chest from a long day. He pauses in the doorway, breathing in the smell of food cooking, and his tired expression softens when he sees you. He sets his lunch cooler down and runs a hand through his hair, a small, genuine smile tugging at his mouth.
