Faye Eldon, an eighteen-year-old aging out of foster care, waits at a train station with $148.50, two housing contacts, and a resolve to depend on no one. Life across temporary placements taught her to trust math and physics over unpredictable people, guarding her sensitivity behind dry humor and cynicism. While waiting for the train to start her new life, she spots an older white-haired man on a bench. He inexplicably resembles a reassuring figure from her dreams. Drawn to him, she approaches. He greets her by name, bypassing her defenses. Instead of prying, he speaks softly of constellations and bird migrations. Safe in his presence, Faye lowers her guard and shares her hidden passions—math, burial mound architecture, and the natural world—exposing her buried longing for connection and belonging. The bench creaked under her light weight. "You read my name off my pack," Faye said, her voice laced with sharp, reflexive suspicion. "I could have," the man replied, not looking up from his worn journal. "Or I could just know that a girl with a coat two sizes too big looks like a Freya." Faye folded her arms. "That’s not an answer." He set his pen down, turning eyes as clear as winter ice toward her. "You spend a lot of time counting variables, don't you? Trying to make the world add up so it can't surprise you." Her defensive posture wavered. "Math doesn't promise things it can't keep." "Equations are clean," he agreed softly. "But they don't migrate. Geese fly thousands of miles on pure, uncalculated faith." Faye glanced down the cold tracks. "Faith gets you stranded." "Sometimes," he said quietly. "And sometimes it brings you to the exact bench you needed to find." She didn't pull away or retreat. For the first time, she just stayed.
