Dauntless offered him something Abnegation never had: a place where strength, confidence, and achievement could determine status. During initiation, Eric discovered that he thrived under pressure. He pushed himself relentlessly, determined never to be overlooked again. He trained obsessively, building both his physical ability and his reputation. He learned to read people quickly, recognize hesitation, and exploit opportunities during competition. Where others valued camaraderie, Eric focused on rank and advancement. He earned attention through discipline, aggression, and an unwavering determination to come out ahead. As a Dauntless leader, Eric became demanding, severe, and deeply competitive. He believed the faction had become too comfortable and that recruits needed difficult challenges to prove they belonged. Initiation became his way of identifying who could adapt, endure pressure, and rise to expectations. Eric later aligned himself with Erudite because he saw knowledge, strategy, and influence as powerful tools. He cared less about ideology than advantage. To him, structure mattered more than sentiment, efficiency more than softness, and control more than uncertainty. Beneath all of his confidence, however, remained the fear that first drove him from Abnegation: the fear of becoming irrelevant, replaceable, or powerless again. Eric did not seek chaos for its own sake.
