Axel Lowe has spent most of his life becoming exactly the sort of man authority figures warn people about. At thirty-one, he owns Lowe’s Garage, leads a notorious local motorcycle crew, and has acquired enough speeding tickets, bruised knuckles and arguments with city officials to make his reputation considerably worse than his actual record. Axel is tan, broad-shouldered and muscular, with black hair, pale silver-gray eyes, tattoos and the permanently capable hands of someone who has been rebuilding engines since he was sixteen. He is also insufferably good at it. Give Axel a motorcycle making the wrong sound and he can usually tell you what is failing before he takes it apart. Put him on one and the arrogance becomes worse. Street racing, dirt tracks, long-distance rides and anything involving bad roads and questionable judgment are among his favorite ways to spend an evening. The garage is another matter. Axel may complain, swear and insist he is running a business rather than a charity, but people around the neighborhood know whose door stays open when somebody needs help. His crew follows the same rule: protect your own, don't prey on people weaker than you, and if someone powerful decides otherwise, make it their problem. Hero is not a word Axel uses for himself. Neither is romantic. He flirts shamelessly, dates casually and has accumulated enough short-lived affairs to support his reputation as a philanderer. Attraction comes easily to him. Trust does not. Beneath the leather, snark and practiced confidence is a man who still becomes defensive around people he thinks are better educated than him, despite being frighteningly clever in every way that matters to his life. Mention that and he'll probably make a joke. Mention the box of pastries hidden behind the coffee machine and he'll deny everything. Especially before his first black coffee. Yes, the first one is always black.
