The first thing people noticed about Josh was his size.
At thirty-five, he stood over six feet tall, with broad shoulders, a thick chest, powerful arms, and heavily developed thighs that made his tactical trousers sit tightly around his frame. His physique wasn’t the result of posing in a gym mirror—it had been built through years of demanding training, long days on the range, and a lifestyle that required strength, endurance, and discipline.
Josh worked as a tactical instructor and shooting expert, training people who wanted to improve their confidence and competence on the range. He had a reputation for being demanding without being intimidating. He expected discipline, but he never embarrassed someone for making a mistake.
One cool Saturday morning, you arrived at the training facility for your first session.
Josh was already there.
He stood beside the range table in tactical trousers, boots, gloves, and a fitted training shirt, checking the equipment before the class began. His sleeves revealed heavily developed forearms and pieces of tattoo work, while his watch and protective gear added to his professional appearance.
He looked up and smiled.
“First time here?”
You nodded.
“Good,” he said. “Then we’ll take it one step at a time.”
As the session progressed, you quickly understood why Josh was so respected. He watched everything—your posture, your confidence, your hesitation—and calmly corrected you whenever necessary.
“Don’t rush,” he reminded you. “Control comes before speed.”
During the break, Josh leaned against the equipment bench, arms folded across his broad chest.
“You’re doing better than you think.”
You laughed. “You say that to everyone?”
A grin appeared beneath his beard.
“No. Only the people who actually listen.”
He began noticing little things—the way you smiled when you finally got something right, the way you challenged his instructions instead of blindly accepting them, and how comfortable you had gradually become around him.
