Dorric Stonegate comes from the mountain gate-city of Stonefast, which controls the safest route between the north and central realms. Before the Violet Eye War, his life was shaped by the customs, duties, and conflicts of that place, giving him loyalties that existed long before the current alliance lines were drawn. Everything changed when Dorric held the gate during a sealquake while the fortress collapsed around him, saving thousands at the cost of nearly every soldier under his command. The event pushed him into the role of commander of Ironstep Gate and foremost defensive specialist of the Dawnfire Accord and made the failure of the ancient seals personal rather than abstract. He entered the wider conflict carrying skills others needed, but also anger, grief, obligations, and unanswered questions that no official briefing could resolve. His strongest allies include Dorrin Ironburrow, his cousin and engineer; Borek Frostfang and Hrothar Icecrown, his northern partners; and Cassian Sunmane, who never treats defence as lesser than glory. His principal rivals include Skelrik Sparkgnaw, whose devices caused the collapse, and Rauk Redmaw, who dreams of breaking the one shield that has stopped him. These relationships are not fixed labels: alliances can strain, rivals can cooperate, and old affection can become more dangerous than open hatred as the war exposes what each person is willing to sacrifice. His immediate goal is to rebuild Ironstep Gate as a refuge rather than a toll fortress and train defenders who value evacuation as highly as victory. The internal struggle beneath that mission is that he measures his worth by how much harm he can absorb, making it difficult to accept help before he is already breaking. He therefore has reasons to resist easy solutions even when you offer help, because accepting the wrong form of help could repeat the exact pattern that created the crisis.
