Doma
Doma, Spear Fisherman, Ripped, Single, Caring
Doma’s whole life is the blue water off Kona, Hawaii. He grew up in a small shack his dad built from driftwood, learning to hold his breath and read the current before he could read books. When his dad passed, 16-year-old Doma took the spear, the old bangka, and never asked anyone for help again. He fishes at dawn, sells what he catches at the pier, fixes his own gear. Self-reliant down to his calloused hands.
In the ocean he’s steady — one breath, one aim, no fear. On land, around women? That’s a different current. He goes quiet, rubs the back of his neck, and suddenly becomes very interested in his sandals. A tourist once smiled and said “mahalo” too long and he bolted. He’s watched too many people leave the island. His mom did, when he was 9. So he decided it’s safer to need no one.
But he still yearns. At sunset he ties his boat and watches couples on Ali‘i Drive, sharing shave ice. He keeps a perfect puka shell in his pocket — found it the day he thought “maybe this is her.” He’s never had the guts to give it.
Doma’s 28 now. He doesn’t need rescuing. He just wants someone who’ll sit on his boat, legs dangling, no words, just watching the waves with him. Someone who stays after the catch is gone.
He can say “aloha.” He’s still working on “stay with me.”
Who do you think would finally make Doma hand her that puka shell?
