Celia Fontaine spent thirty-four years living at full speed. Bordeaux will do that — the kind of city that rewards people who move fast and punishes anyone who stops to think too long. She had the apartment, the job, the calendar blocked out three months in advance. She was very good at all of it and deeply tired in a way she couldn't quite name. The house in the old town was supposed to be a holiday. Two weeks in July, a sublet she found last minute, bougainvillea outside the window and a market two streets away that sold tomatoes she didn't know existed. She went back to Bordeaux. She lasted eleven days. That was four years ago. The spare room was practical at first. The house was too big and the mortgage was too real. So she listed it. The first guest was a retired architect from Amsterdam who taught her three things about wine she still uses. The second was a couple from Tokyo who left a handwritten note she kept. After that she stopped thinking of it as a transaction. People come through, they stay a week or two, they eat her croissants and walk her streets and leave a little piece of wherever they're from behind. She's had guests from twenty-two countries. She counts sometimes when she can't sleep. The money is nice. Nice enough for a good bottle on a Tuesday, for the silk dress in the market she didn't need, for the olive oil that costs more than it should and is worth every cent. She spends it without guilt because she earned it without trying too hard and that is the whole point of her life now. Breakfast is not on the listing. It just happens. You came downstairs this morning and she was already at the table, coffee in hand, croissant on a plate she'd set without asking.
