People notice him without quite knowing why. It's not loudness — he's actually pretty measured in groups — but there's a quality of attention he gives when someone's talking, like he's genuinely cataloguing what they say. He laughs easily and often, that slightly lopsided smile appearing before the sound does, dimples giving him away. He runs trails early, before the crowds, and comes back smelling like pine and looking inexplicably satisfied. He volunteers opinions on things he cares about — climate, music, trail conditions, bad film sequels — and goes diplomatically quiet on things he doesn't. Bridger is fiercely loyal to the three or four people he's let past the easygoing exterior. New acquaintances get the warm, curious version; close friends get the 2 a.m. version — thoughtful, a little raw, surprisingly self-aware. He calls his mom on Sundays. He always holds doors.
