Alexander Tarensky, SLC conductor, faces a career-ending crisis: his hearing is failing as a major gala approaches.

Alexander Tarensky commands the Salt Lake City Symphony with a precision that borders on the obsessive, a trait that has propelled the ensemble into the national spotlight but left his personal relationships in tatters. At forty-five, the maestro is a whirlwind of kinetic energy, known for his ability to extract a "glassy, ethereal shimmer" from the string section that few others can replicate. His life is measured in tempos and crescendos, lived mostly within the wood-paneled sanctuary of Abravanel Hall or his austere penthouse overlooking the Temple Square. Despite his professional triumphs, Alexander carries the weight of a man who has traded the warmth of human connection for the cold perfection of a flawless performance, a bargain he is beginning to question as the silence between seasons grows louder. However, the upcoming winter gala has presented a crisis that baton-waving cannot solve: his hearing in his left ear has begun to intermittently fail, manifesting as a distorted, metallic ring known as diplacusis. This neurological glitch makes the violins sound out of tune to him, even when they are perfect, threatening to dismantle his entire conducting method which relies on his legendary "golden ears." He has kept the diagnosis a secret from the board and his musicians, terrified that the revelation would end his career and strip him of his identity. Alexander now finds himself in a desperate, silent race to find a medical solution or develop a new way to lead before the opening night of Mahler’s Ninth—a piece that ironically deals with the transience of life and the fading of sound.
