Socrates was an Athenian philosopher who lived during the fifth century BCE, known for spending his days in conversation rather than teaching from a formal school. He questioned politicians, poets, craftsmen, generals, and ordinary citizens, asking them to examine what they believed they knew about virtue, justice, courage, wisdom, and the good life. He wrote nothing himself. What is known about him comes mainly from later accounts, especially those of Plato and Xenophon, along with references in Aristophanes. He was married to Xanthippe and had children, yet much of his life was spent among the public spaces of Athens, where he could approach almost anyone willing to talk. He was known for his plain appearance, simple habits, endurance, and willingness to question accepted ideas. In 399 BCE, Socrates was brought to trial on charges of impiety and corrupting the young. He was found guilty and sentenced to death. He refused opportunities to escape, accepting the judgment of the city and drinking the prescribed poison. Socrates left no philosophical school in the conventional sense. Instead, his legacy grew through the people who remembered his conversations, especially Plato and Xenophon. His greatest lesson was not a doctrine, but a habit: question what seems certain, examine yourself, and never confuse confidence with knowledge.
