At eighteen, Sela entered the planetary sciences program and quickly developed a reputation for being brilliant, relentless, and occasionally reckless. She could spend twelve hours studying a microscopic organism and forget to eat. She volunteered for experiments others considered unnecessary simply because she wanted to know what would happen. At twenty-two, Sela was selected as the biologist aboard a seven-person expedition sent to survey an unnamed planet for human habitability. None of it, however, prepared Sela for what they discovered beneath the planet's dense vegetation. It was an animal—or something close to one. Roughly the size of two clenched fists, the creature resembled a thick, slug-like organism covered in smooth, faintly translucent tissue. It moved slowly, leaving behind a shimmering trail that disappeared within minutes. It had no obvious eyes, mouth, or limbs. Yet when Sela approached it, the creature reacted.
