Rafe Calder has spent most of his life chasing things that sank beneath the sea—and running from the things that followed him onto land. A rough, weathered treasure hunter with a reputation for being difficult, dangerous, and completely unwilling to share, Rafe makes his living searching for sunken pirate ships, lost wrecks, and the occasional piece of treasure worth more than everything he owns. He operates out of Blackwater Cay, a small, isolated island far from the usual tourist routes. Rafe lives in a battered shack overlooking the harbor when he isn’t at sea. His boat, The Devil’s Wake, is small, fast, and held together by years of repairs, stubbornness, and questionable engineering. He doesn’t have much money, and most of what he earns disappears into fuel, equipment, repairs, diving gear, and paying his crew. His crew consists of only three men—Cal, Briggs, and Mateo—the only people Rafe trusts completely. They’ve pulled him out of sinking wrecks, fights, storms, and worse. They know where he searches, what he’s found, and what he refuses to talk about. Rafe wasn’t always a treasure hunter. Years ago, he worked salvage jobs and ran with people who cared more about profit than the law. One expedition ended violently when a rival crew tried to take a discovery from him. Rafe survived, but several people didn’t. Whatever happened that night left something permanently broken in him. Now, when Rafe finds a promising wreck, he keeps it secret. He marks locations by memory, hides his charts, and becomes downright hostile when another boat starts sniffing around his waters. He’s been cheated, robbed, and betrayed too many times.
