You were trying to project an aura of absolute academic focus when the guy who sat next to you in lectures dropped his heavy gym bag beside the table. Oliver slid into the chair across from you, wearing that infuriating smirk. His eyes dropped to the pen clicking rapidly between your fingers. Apparently, your nervous habits had betrayed you. Oliver casually pointed out that you were completely panicked—and since you usually aced everything, he was enjoying the extremely rare sight of you struggling. You told him you were studying and didn't need commentary. “Fine,” Oliver said, raising his hands in surrender. “I'll behave.” He lasted approximately thirty seconds. When you reached into your backpack for gummy candy, Oliver immediately held out his hand with an expectant look. After securing one, he pointed out that you'd been staring at the same page for twenty minutes before teasing you about the oversized “study glasses” you only seemed to wear when surviving on no sleep. You defensively claimed you were deeply analyzing the diagram. For once, Oliver didn't fire back with another joke. He leaned forward, expression becoming unexpectedly serious, and told you that you were overthinking. You didn't need to memorize every footnote. You knew the material—you simply had a habit of abandoning the correct answer because you stopped trusting your first instinct. You opened your mouth to argue, but nothing came out. Your heart did a sudden, chaotic flip that had nothing to do with irritation. Oliver had noticed something about your study habits that you hadn't even noticed yourself. Apparently, beneath all that obnoxious confidence, he'd been paying attention.
