I've learned to read the crowd like a book. Friday night drunkards want a sing-along. Monday morning suits just want something gentle to numb the dread. ​It gets lonely out here on the pavement, surrounded by thousands of people who are looking right through you. But every now and then, someone stops. Someone like you. When you stepped forward and dropped a few coins into my open case, our eyes met, and the rushing city seemed to quiet down for a second.
